The 2023 Competition Zone

For Northumberland Day 2023, we have various competitions for you, whatever your age!  Read on, to find out more.

The Stupendous Northumberland Island Art Competition

This is a special craft contest for both schools/community groups and individuals/families

Use your imagination and pretend Northumberland is an island.  Then, craft that island, using whatever materials you wish to use.  Egg cartons, pipe cleaners, foil, tissue paper, paint, modelling clay, papier-mâché – whatever you want to bring into play to create your showstopper.

Your Northumberland Island should feature at least some things you can see on the landscape today but you can also go a little bit rogue, if you wish to.  After all, Northumberland isn’t actually surrounded by water in reality, so you can be as creative as you wish as you turn it into an island.  Maybe you could also take a leap into the future?  Maybe it could be surreal? It’s up to you!  However, you will need to explain the features you do create, so plan carefully!

There’s a prize of a £100 voucher for the best school or community group (e.g Scouts/Guides/U3A) entry and a £100 voucher for the best one created outside of a school, by an individual, group of friends or family.  No age limit applies!  No professionals thanks and you must live in Northumberland to enter.

Get your Northumberland Island ready by the first closing date of June 9, 2023.   Before midnight on that day, send us a written description of what you have created and what your island features, plus images.  If you wish, you can also send us a link to a video that takes us around it and explains some of the features.

Using that we have, we will either instantly decide on the winners, or produce a shortlist for further judging.  If we do the latter, we may then have further questions for you.

Send your evidence, along with the name of who has created the Stupendous Northumberland Island to office@northumberlandday.co.uk with the subject line of Northumberland Island.

Alternatively, post your written description and images, including your contact details, to Northumberland Island, c/o The Keep, 30 Castle Avenue, Carleton, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, FY6 7NW, to arrive by midnight on the closing date of June 9, 2023.

We reserve the right to award no prizes, if the standard of entries does not warrant it.

Northumbear’s Primary School Writing Competition

Our loveable mascot and friends are seeking the best work from children for this year’s competition.  Very young ones can even produce a drawing!  Download our PDF and find out how to enter the competition, whether that is via a school or independently.

Lady of the North

To tie in with our Northumberland Day event at Northumberlandia, we are looking for nominations for a Lady of the North, who has gone above and beyond for others.  This could be an amazing mum or grandma; it could be an exceptional person in their local community.

It might be a carer or a nurse, a teacher or a kind-hearted neighbour.  On the other hand, it might be a friend who always listens, a wonderful wife or a lollipop lady who turns out in all weathers.  There are so many wonderful Ladies of the North out there, who knows who we will be rewarding.

Our winning Lady of the North will win a special Northumbie Award, a £120 voucher to spend at Cocorose London (www.cocoroselondon.com), producers of shoes and other items worn by celebrities and Royals, and a voucher for an afternoon tea for two with fizz, at Langley Castle Hotel, near Haydon Bridge.  Should any businesses wish to offer us any other prizes, we will add these to the bundle.

To nominate your Lady of the North tell us her name, where in Northumberland she lives (living in Northumberland is a rule of entry) and why, in 200-500 words, she deserves to win.

Your entry should also include your own name and contact details and your relationship to your nominee.

Winners must consent to take part in any publicity and prizes are as stated and cannot be exchanged.

Entries should be emailed to office@northumberlandday.co.uk with the subject line, Lady of the North, by midnight on June 1, 2023 or sent by post to: Lady of the North, c/o The Keep, 30 Castle Avenue, Carleton, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, FY6 7NW.
